Marty Haugen is a liturgical composer from Eagan, Minnesota. For the past fifteen years he has presented workshops across North America, Europe, Australia, and Central America for both Roman Catholic and Protestant liturgical ministers. His communion setting, Now the Feast and Celebration, and his vespers service, Holden Evening Prayer, are well known among Lutheran congregations, while his Mass of Creation is arguably the most widely used musical setting of the Ordinary among English-speaking Roman Catholic parishes. Together with David Haas, he began the popular GIA psalm series, Psalms for the Church Year. Marty has over 250 separate titles published through GIA on more than twenty recorded collections, including such songs as "We Remember," "Shepherd Me, O God," and "Gather Us In." His music appears in numerous GIA hymnals, as well as hymnals produced for Canadian and Australian Roman Catholics, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and numerous other Protestant denominations.
Workshops
Faithful and Prophetic Ministry
This presentation looks at the future of liturgical prayer. It especially focuses on the role of the liturgical minister as both faithful servant of a living liturgical tradition and prophetic voice of challenge to the Christian community.
Music's Place within the Eucharistic Celebration
This workshop and reading session explores the nature of ritual music-what is it, how can it be evaluated, how can ministers choose and present it most effectively within community prayer? Musical examples will be used to demonstrate a variety of creative methods. (The reading session portion of the workshop can be tailored to offer resources for one or more specific seasons of the liturgical year.)
Music from and for the World Church
The paschal mystery is truly revealed only when all Christians embrace their unity in Christ expressed through their unique cultural expressions. This workshop and reading session provides a rationale for the inclusion of a multitude of cultural expressions. It also offers suggestions on how elements of inculturation can best be introduced into a community and gives all present a chance to sing and experience a variety of good musical resources from the world church.
Ritual Music for the Rites
How does music best serve the various rites of Christian celebration? This workshop and reading session explores the role and presentation of music within the rites of initiation, weddings, and funerals.
The Mechanics of Parish Music
This workshop is about the "ins" and "outs" of leadership in a parish music program: recruiting and formation of ministers, training of cantors, rehearsals for groups and assemblies, teaching new music, working with instrumental and vocal ensembles, choosing or preparing worship aids. It is normally preceded by a presentation that establishes the principles of music ministry (such as "Faithful and Prophetic Ministry").
